KnowBe4 is the juggernaut of the security awareness training industry. To illustrate: in 2023, they were acquired for no less than 4.6 billion dollars.

Over the course of 20+ years, they have built a strong product offering, including a ton of features, add-ons, and a huge training content library. Reading all the documentation on what the product can do will take you a few hours, and their pricing page reflects that complexity.

Their pricing is ‘transparent’, but figuring out what you’ll have to pay at then end of the month is nonetheless a puzzle. The only simple answer to ‘what is KnowBe4’s pricing per user’ is ‘it depends’.

To help you put the pieces together, I’ve decided to break down KnowBe4’s pricing per user, depending on context. Let’s get into it, shall we?

Deciphering KnowBe4’s pricing page

3-year contracts only

What makes this pricing page unique from the jump is that they only show pricing for 3-year contracts. Whether this means you can only sign 3-year contracts is not mentioned. The other part that jumps out is that these prices only apply to companies in North America. Outside of it, prices ‘may’ differ.

Pricing plans

There are four different pricing plans:

  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum
  • Diamond

The Diamond plan is described as their ‘Most Popular’ plan. Coincidentally, it’s also the most expensive plan.

In this Diamond plan, you get access to a wide range of exclusive features, including:

  • PasswordIQ: A tool that checks for password vulnerabilities in your active directory
  • Second Change: A tool for Outlook and Microsoft 365 that warns users when clicking a link
  • AI-recommended optional learning: AI recommends training based on your users’ historic performance.

All of these features sound fine, but I personally doubt that they’re enough to make the Diamond plan the most popular one among customers.

Add-ons

Then there’s the add-ons.

The first add-on is called ‘AIDA’. They describe this add-on as follows: “AIDA is an innovative suite of AI-native security agents designed to automate and enhance human risk management. By leveraging multiple AI technologies, AIDA brings together human and artificial intelligence to reduce human risk. AIDA includes advanced reporting by role, executive reports, and more.”

I hope that clears things up for you, because I can’t say I fully understand what it does after reading this. You can only buy this add-on if you’re a Diamond user, by the way.

Starting from 100 users, you can also buy KnowBe4’s compliance training content. This will cost you $0.93 per user, per month, on top of your existing bill.

The Security Coach add-on delivers real-time coaching based on risky end-user behavior. How they exactly detect this end-user behavior isn’t mentioned on the pricing site or their product page.

There’s also an add-on for student-focused content and a phishing prevention add-on.

The quote that explains it all

At the bottom of the pricing page is a quote by a happy KnowBe4 customer. It’s by the Chief Information Security Officer of Ferrari Group: “KnowBe4 is not just security training—it’s a strategic product that helps us build a culture of security and compliance across our global enterprise.”

This quote fits with what I personally get from studying this pricing. This product is probably great for the enterprise.

An enterprise with a specialized security awareness team would love to get a gigantic content library to put together their own custom training program. A small organization doesn’t always have the resources to do that.

A 3-year contact? No problem for an enterprise organization. If you’re that big, you’re not just switching vendors that easily anyway. Onboarding the tool alone will take ages, so switching within the year? Never happening. For smaller organizations, a 3-year contract can be problematic.

Conclusion

KnowBe4 offers a great product for the enterprise. Their pricing page is complex, which is understandable considering the complexity of the platform.

For smaller organizations that are looking for a simple compliance training platform with straightforward and affordable pricing, there are alternatives.
